An improvisation I put together for Ned Rush's charity "More Kicks than Friends" micro festival. The patch is a combination of the patch from "Dream State" and "Filling in the (W)holes".
More Kicks than Friends playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLerLtHwIDOSXPhwqrJ25WmXOwmXrazCH- Kindred Dichotomy is the first interactive composition written for both TRAVIS I and TRAVIS II (Touch Responsive Augmented Violin Interface System). As such, the piece demonstrates how well the systems could be used simultaneously. It integrates the sensors and hardware of the augmented violins with musical composition and visual art. Each violin’s sound is processed in Max MSP/Jitter. Simultaneously the data from the fingerboard sensors controls the parameters of these sound processes. The data is also affecting aspects of the projected visuals. Depending on the section of the piece, parameters of brightness, hue, dimensions, type of shape, and shaders are all being controlled. Aesthetically, Kindred Dichotomy explores the concept of two entities establishing their opposite identities, as well as discovering core similarities between them. There are motifs that characterize each violin, and in the middle of the piece, the violins start to blend and quote each other’s style. In the end they return to their original motifs.
Played with Lora Oehlberg. Composed: 2019 Score: "Kindred Dichotomy""Dream State" is the first piece made for TRAVIS II. It is semi-improvised. Different sound processes were mapped to each of the four strings, as well as different parameters for the visuals.
Composed: 2019 "Breathe" was made for live, amplified breathing, and TRAVIS I. It is semi-improvised and explores the concept of how there are times when breathing feels difficult, and other times when it is smooth and easy. The form loosely follows the haiku that is stated in the beginning of the piece:
“Try to inhale slow Then sink to where it’s quiet. Gasp, exhale again.” Performed at the Forms of Sound concert at the University of Calgary, 2019. |

"Filling In the (W)holes" first builds texture by distorting percussive sounds. It then explores the whole tone scales. Specific notes, as recognized from the sensor's data, are additionally mapped to MIDI messages, which trigger different presets for both the sound and the visuals. As it breaks free from the strict whole tone structure and becomes more chromatic, the piece becomes more improvisatory. The visuals reflect this progression by starting as a large circle, and gradually becoming a tighter ball.
Composed: 2018. Distance takes a toll on relationships. "Losing Touch" focus on the journey of two sisters and how their difference contrasts, yet, accompanies one another. It is an exploration of their diminishing relationship, which is represented through movement and negative space between the characters.

Fire and Ice are extreme opposites, however, they are equally capable of destruction. Likewise, their sonic material share similar qualities. Our piece explores the interaction between these two extremes. The violin is used to represent the crackling of ice, and flute samples mimic the combusting flames.

Fire and Ice was originally a collaborative piece in the UBC SUBCLASS. I re-programmed it so that I could perform it solo. However, I could not include the visuals because they are not on my computer. In the original performance, the visual Max patch was on Elizabeth's computer and I was sending data to control the colours with TRAVIS via networking.

This was the first piece made for TRAVIS. It was meant to showcase as many capabilities that the system has as possible, while still maintaining musicality.
First premiered at the Winter Bang! Festival at UBC, 2017. This particular performance was recorded in January 2018. Score: "Colour of the Birds' Cries" |

I presented TRAVIS at the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference, 2018; UBC. There I received the MURC - URO Interdisciplinary Award.
